Branches and what drives the fee
Fees at the same college can differ widely by branch. Computer Science, AI and Machine Learning, and Data Science cost the most and fill first; Electronics, Information Science and others follow. When comparing colleges, compare the same branch.

What "direct admission" means
In engineering, "direct admission" means a management quota seat, taken at the college's published management fee. It is legal. What is not legal is paying anything above the published fee. Karnataka has banned capitation fees since 1984. Get every figure in writing before you pay.
When to decide
KCET and COMEDK counselling run in rounds over several weeks, and management seats open alongside them. The hard part is timing: waiting for a better KCET or COMEDK round can mean losing a management seat in your preferred branch, and taking a management seat early can mean paying more than you needed to.
